Salem operates under a Board of Selectmen-Town
Meeting form of Government, which permits maximum participation of the
registered voters and property owners. The annual budget is adopted by
the Town Meeting and adjourned to a referendum, based on budgets
submitted by Town Departments and scrutinized for affordability by the
Board of Finance. All Town ordinances are approved by a Town Meeting.
Salem is a Community of Volunteers that provides the services and
amenities of a modern town through a combination of paid employees and
many conscientious residents.
The Salem Town Office at 270 Hartford Road is open
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. On
Thursday, office hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On Friday,
office hours are from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
The First Selectman, Town Clerk, Treasurer,
Assessor, and Tax Collector are available during regular hours and at
