janus
A Brooklyn-based group, formed in 2002, janus is recognized for their presentation of new and exciting works. Named after a Greek god whose double-faced image looks to the past and to the future, janus, is dedicated to acoustic chamber music for the new century. The group commissions new works and collaborates on music projects with Princeton, Colgate, New York and Cornell Universities, as well as the Aspen Music Festival and School. janus has been featured at Symphony Space, BAM Café, the Berkshire Fringe Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and other venues. janus is on the New Amsterdam record label and can be heard on Andrew McKenna Lee’s critically acclaimed CD “Gravity and Air.” janus’ much anticipated
debut CD is forthcoming in Fall 2010. The concert at the Salem Library is free and open to all.
Amanda Baker, the flutist, is a Salem, CT resident and also a member of the United States Coast Guard Band. She has performed at the state funerals of Presidents Ford and Reagan and the Inaugurations of President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. Prior to the Coast Guard Band, Amanda was the Principal flutist of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in Southern China. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University in 1998 and her Master’s in Music from Yale University in 2000.
In addition to her work with janus, Beth Meyers is also a member of the band, QQQ, comprising a viola, hardanger fiddle, acoustic guitar and drums, whose album “Unpacking the Trailer” on New Amsterdam Records was called “gorgeous … a bold statement of purpose disguised as an unpretentious lark” (Time Out NY). Beth has performed with many orchestras and ensembles. She currently subs in the pit orchestra of the Broadway musical, “Wicked” and tours with pop artist Regina Spektor. She is featured on a Steve Reich album and other artists and has worked with Pierre Boulez and Meredith Monk, among other composers and performers. Beth has a Masters Degree and undergraduate degree in music from the Eastman School of Music.
In addition to her work with janus, Nuiko Wadden, harpist holds the principal harp position in both the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestras and with the Des Moines Metro Opera. She is also a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). Ms. Wadden has been a prizewinner in numerous competitions including the 2005 Minnesota Orchestra Competition. She has been recognized in the Ann Adams, ASTA, American Harp Society, and Houston Tuesday Music Club competitions. Originally from Chicago, she has appeared in a number of different chamber series there, including the Orpheus Young Artists series Music in the Loft chamber series. Ms. Wadden is, performing and living in both Pittsburgh and New York. Interested in maintaining an active orchestral career, she acts as a
substitute harpist for the Milwaukee, Minnesota, Houston, and Pittsburgh Symphonies.
