SALEM RECREATION COMMISSION

The Salem Recreation Commission continues to support recreational opportunities for all Salem residents. The town’s leagues provide excellent coaching for children ages four through thirteen in baseball, soccer and basketball. Because of these programs Salem is very proud of our Salem and East Lyme High School athletes that excel in their sport and bring pride to our town and commission. The Recreation Commission proudly unveiled a new scoreboard at the Babe Ruth field. This scoreboard was made possible by avery generous donation by the Salem Lions and the Salem Youth Baseball League.

The Commission worked closely with the Lions on the design and SYBL on the type of scoreboard. In November of 2015, the Round Hill Road recreation complex saw the installation of a new and long overdue playscape. Some of the outdated and unsafe equipment was removed and replaced with state of the art playground equipment. While the playscape area was being prepared, the Salem Public Works Dept. took the opportunity to install drainage pipe and catch basins. The new drainage should eliminate the flooding which happens every Spring on the major’s baseball field and playscape. Rental of our fields generate approximately $8,000 in revenue for the town. The tennis and basketball courts are in constant use and have held up well. We expect to resurface both in 2017/2018.

The Commission was the fortunate recipient of another well done Eagle Scout project. This year, Jason LaBonte reroofed four of the dugouts at Round Hill Road. Jason is one of many scouts who have made our recreation complexes a better place for recreation.

The Commission continues to offer the, Holiday Tree Lighting, Memorial Day Bike Contest, sponsor the Lions Easter Egg Hunt and decorate the Town Hall window boxes and planters  on a yearly basis. Special thanks to Anne Duncan of the Salem Herb Farm who patiently worked with me on the window box order every Spring for the last thirteen years!

The Salem Recreation Commission benefits from, and depends on the community to make it a success. The taxpayers who fund recreation, the Board of Finance who see value in recreation, the Public Works crew who take pride and do quality work on our rec areas, our program coordinator and especially the residents who use our facilities and make it all worth while. The Salem Recreation Commission is fortunate to have the most dedicated members who work as a team and pull it all together month in and month out:

Dave Kennedy, Bob Appleby, Al Giansanti, Pam Henry, Doug Morrow, Crispin Freso-Hawes, Diane Weston and Terri Natoli.

Respectfully Submitted

Salem Recreation Commission Chairman
