Building

Mission Statement

The Building Department is responsible for the issuance of building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, demolition and change of occupancy permits.

Who Needs a Permit?

A permit is required whenever any owner or authorized agent intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system. These requirements pertain to all buildings and structures, including one and two family structures.

PERMIT APPLICATIONS
Permit applications can be submitted in person, mailed, e-mailed or placed in the drop box located outside of Town Hall. Applications are available online. Please ensure that all permit applications are accompanied with:

  • Copy of Trade License
  • Certificate of Insurance (with Workers Compensation) or a completed 7A, 7B or 7C form
  • Applicable drawings, plans, and/or plot plan
  • Permit fee(s)
PLEASE CONTACT US FOR THE EXACT FEE AMOUNT via e-mail or telephone during business hours to ensure that the proper amount is submitted and avoid any delays in the processing of your permit(s). Fees may be paid online at: https://client.pointandpay.net/web/TownofSalemBuildingandRecreation. Please note that all credit/debit/online payments incur a non-refundable third-party convenience fee.

Access the applications for Zoning Permits, the Uncas Health District, Propane Tank Installation, and Insurance Waiver Forms here.

The (minimum) review fee for the Uncas Health District is $75.00. Please contact them directly with questions related to your well or septic system at (860) 823-1189.

Zoning Permits require a fee of either $85.00 (Accessory Structures over 100SF) or $110.00 (Main Building or Primary Use Structure). All items that will expand the footprint of the residence or business require a Zoning Permit.

Please ensure that the location and distances from the property line and well and septic are clearly indicated on the plot plan. Should you need a copy of your property’s plot plan, please contact the office.
