Inland Wetlands & Conservation Commission
Mission Statement
The Inland Wetlands and Conservation Commission shall promulgate and enforce such regulations and amendments in conformity with the regulations of the State Commissioner of Environmental Protection and the Inland Wetlands and watercourses Act, as amended, as are necessary to protect wetlands and watercourses in the Town.
The mission of the Salem Inland Wetlands and Conservation Commission is twofold:
- Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission – In the Town of Salem, pursuant to Section 22a-36 through 22a-45, inclusive, of the Connecticut General Statutes, as amended, the Commission shall enforce the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Act and shall issue, with conditions, limitations or modifications, or deny permits for all regulated activities within wetlands and watercourses. The Commission has authorized its Agent to approve permits within a 75' Upland Review Area of such wetlands and watercourses.
- Conservation Commission – The Commission was established in accordance with Section 7-131a of the Connecticut General Statutes for the development, conservation, supervision, and regulation of natural resources, including watercourses within the Town of Salem. The Commission shall conduct research into the utilization and possible utilization of land areas of Salem; keep an index of open areas, publicly and privately owned, including open marshlands, swamps and other wetlands, for the purpose of obtaining information on the proper use of such areas; and shall administer gifts in the name of the Town for any of its purposes subject to the terms of the gift.
